HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE PHILLIE PHANATIC!! The Phanatic debuted on April 25, 1978, at The Vet, when the Phils played the Chicago Cubs.
Born and raised a Phillies fan, I never questioned the Phanatic’s being our mascot, and simply welcomed him into my life with an open heart and mind, as I would any green furred and feathered friend. However, after perusing wikipedia just now, I am left with SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!

The Phillie Phanatic is the official mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies Major League Baseball team. He is a large, furry, green Anteater with an extendable tongue. He is originally from the Galapagos Island but is truly a South Philly guy who is the Phillies’ biggest Phan. He is well known for mocking the opposing team, especially the NY Mets. He drives a four wheeler ATV around the stadium and shoots hot dogs into the stands.

How did he get to South Philly from the Galapagos?? And why was this a sufficient explanation as to his being our mascot?? Don’t get me wrong, I’d take the Phanatic over some creepy, lecherous Ben Franklin or a tacky foam Liberty Bell any day, but what da fuqqqq was going on in 1978 that this carpetbagging Vermilingua seemed like a totally appropriate representative for a North East baseball team??
Let’s not even talk about the physical differences between the Phanatic and a real anteater. My man Charles Darwin chilled for a minute in the Galapagos Islands, formulating many of his theories on evolution by studying the species there. Where the fuck was this green ass mother fucker?? Too busy eating ants I bet, and feeling no qualms ‘bout shooting hotdogs at people.
